Water pollution
Water pollution can seriously damage the viability of ecosystems.
The UK has standards that:
- protect water resources in terms of public health and nutrition
- allow a greater number of species to prosper in rivers and other waters
The Environment Agency is responsible for protecting the cleanliness and purity of watercourses and regulating emissions from prescribed industrial processes. Anyone discharging waste products into a watercourse or supply must have a consent permit from them.
If you would like to report a water pollution incident or you are concerned about the colour, odour or condition of a watercourse near you, contact the Environment Agency on their 24-hour hotline: 0800 80 70 60.
