In a statement released by her daughter, on behalf of the family, Rebecca Blackwood said:

“We are saddened to announce the passing of our beloved, Maureen Dobson, devoted mother, grandmother, niece, friend and committed public servant.

Her dedication as a serving Nottinghamshire County Councillor, Newark and Sherwood District Councillor, trustee of Headway Lincolnshire, Newark Community First Aid, St Leonards Hospital Trust and supporter of the Trent Vale Trail was nothing less than extraordinary.

“Throughout Maureen’s life her character, independent principles, humour and optimism never wavered. She had an infinite capacity to get things done for others whilst she privately battled cancer.

“Her family and friends thank everyone for the expressions of love and support they have received.”

Independent Councillor Mrs Maureen Dobson first joined the District Council in July 1978 to represent the Castle Ward where she served until 1991.

Following a break in service, she was elected to the Winthorpe Ward in 1999 and then served the Collingham Ward from 2015 until present day.

Chief Executive of Newark and Sherwood District Council, John Robinson, said: “I’m extremely sorry to hear that Maureen has passed away. Despite her illness, she continued to put the needs of others first and was relentless in serving the people she represented. Maureen will be hugely missed by many at the Council and in the community, who regarded her as their friend as well as their elected representative”.

Newark and Sherwood District Council Leader, Councillor David Lloyd, said: “It is with much sadness that I learned of the passing of Councillor Maureen Dobson.  Maureen has made a significant contribution to the work of our Council and was devoted to the wards she represented.  My sincere condolences go out to Maureen’s family.”
