Following the Extraordinary Full Council meeting on Wednesday 24 November, Councillors voted in favour of purchasing the freehold to the land adjacent to Newark Library.  The full report is available on our website.

At 2.30pm on Friday 12 November 2021, Deputy Leader of Newark and Sherwood District Council, Councillor Keith Girling, delivered an update to campaigners at the site on London Road.

He praised the campaigners who have protested peacefully and with dignity.  Councillor Girling confirmed that ongoing talks with the landowner have resulted in a new late offer coming forward.  Details of this offer will be presented at an Extraordinary Full Council Meeting as soon as the Council’s constitution allows.  Councillor Girling confirmed that, subject to the new offer coming from the landowners solicitor and if approved, the trees and the green space adjacent to the library would remain.

Councillor Girling said: “From a personal point of view, I know which way I’m going to vote. I’m in favour of the new deal.  There is still a cost to the Council but actually from my point of view, the people have spoken and we listened to them.”
