Tenancy strategy
The Localism Act introduced a duty for local authorities to produce a tenancy strategy.
Our Tenancy Strategy (PDF File, 496kb) was adopted in November 2022 , following consultation with the providers of social housing in Newark and Sherwood and other stakeholders.
The document sets out details that all registered providers of social housing in the area must consider when creating their own tenancy policies. It also includes some contextual information about the Newark and Sherwood housing market and levels of housing need in the district.
Specifically it sets out the Council's expectations of registered providers with regard to:
- affordability of rents
- types of tenancy
- length of tenancy
- circumstances under which a fixed-term tenancy might not be renewed
- governance arrangements and monitoring how the new tenancies are working
The document is intended to make rental costs, tenancy lengths, types and conditions fair and affordable. It exists to help make the best use of housing stock in the district and to provide stability and protection for our residents.
