Newark Buttermarket
Situated behind the Town Hall, Newark Buttermarket was opened in 1884. Designed as a covered market, it’s a beautiful building that has a major role to play in boosting the town’s retail, cultural and leisure offer.
It’s always been a place to find clever and passionate independent retailers selling a host of wares from food to crafts and eco cosmetics to household furnishings.
Plans for the future
Newark Buttermarket and Royal Exchange is now owned and managed in partnership by Newark and Sherwood District Council and Newark Town Council.
We have undertaken repairs and renovation and a phased plan of action is underway to bring activity and life back into the building with new long term retail, food and drink and high street services.
New retailers who have moved into the premises include:
Tambo Lounge - offering delicious, fresh food and drinks including vegan and gluten-free options. The space has a spirit of lounging. Relax and enjoy breakfast, lunch, tea or dinner or the licensed bar that runs through into the late evening
Specsavers - the national optical chain has opened their doors at new premises adjacent to Newark Buttermarket
Iguazu - a family-run shop with a passion for equality and helping those in developing countries to achieve better trading conditions. Iguazu is the first shop in Newark solely dedicated to selling fair trade products, including clothing, sterling silver, gemstone jewellery and furniture.
Hobsons Shoes- an independent footwear retailer, offering quality footwear for ladies & gents from brands including HB Shoes, Rieker, Ara, Lunar and Steptronic.
