Spring Cleaning Newark and Sherwood
Posted on: Monday, March 24, 2025The Great British Spring Clean has returned to Newark and Sherwood for another year.
From now until Sunday 6 April 2025, Newark and Sherwood District Council will be taking part in the campaign and is encouraging residents to get involved and help cleanse the district of litter in our communities.
Litter-picking is a simple action that anyone can do to make an immediate and visible difference to the environment where we live, work and play. Thousands of amazing #LitterHeroes will be showing they love where they live by taking part in the nation’s biggest mass-action environmental campaign.
During the spring clean campaign, information will be shared on how residents can get involved in community litter picks, including how the District Council helps with providing equipment and collecting the litter.
Matthew Finch, Director of Communities and Environment at Newark and Sherwood District Council, said: “The Great British Spring Clean is a brilliant initiative for communities to come together and take action against litter – enhancing all the incredible ways our environmental and street scene teams keep our district clean and tidy.
“Sometimes, problem litter can include ‘retro rubbish’ that was dropped many years ago but is still causing harm to our environment today, releasing greenhouse gases as it slowly breaks down in our soil and water, which contributes to the climate crisis.
“This is a great opportunity to join with family, friends, neighbours and achieve something for the greater good. So, if you want to help protect our wildlife and the places you love this Spring, join the initiative today.”
The national and annual Great British Spring Clean campaign encourages the public to join forces with a range of partners, from local councils and community groups to larger businesses, to tackle littering in their area.
The District Council offers support all year round to any person, parish council, school or local community group that would like to organise a voluntary litter pick in their area. Support provided includes promoting the pick locally to encourage involvement, providing equipment including black bags and high vis vests for the group, and any waste will be collected by the District Council's waste team.
All litter picking activities can be logged on Green Rewards to earn points that could win residents a voucher to spend locally: https://www.notts.greenrewards.co.uk/
The LitterLotto app also gives residents an opportunity to turn ‘trash into cash’ while keeping the district clean. More information on the free app can be found on the District Council website: https://www.newark-sherwooddc.gov.uk/recycling/litterlotto/.
