Become a Green Champion Today!

Posted on: Tuesday, June 11, 2024

Are you ready to make a difference in your community and for the environment? Newark and Sherwood District Council is thrilled to launch Green Champions, a scheme inviting residents who are dedicated to improving their local area to become community litter pickers.

As a Green Champion, you’re not just picking up litter; you’ll be joining the charge in Newark and Sherwood’s battle against climate change. Though a simple action, litter picking makes an immediate and visible difference to our environment where we live, work and play. Residents will receive all the necessary equipment to carry out regular voluntary litter picking, including collection bags and high-visibility vests provided by the Council, who will also collect the litter gathered.

Matthew Finch, Director of Communities and Environment at Newark and Sherwood District Council said: “The district is no stranger to the incredible impact of collective action and has already witnessed the power of community spirit through previous voluntary litter picks, and what better time to announce our Green Champions scheme, than during Great Big Green Week.”

“By becoming a Green Champion you’re helping create a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future for our district and are helping to make Newark and Sherwood a place for everyone to enjoy.”

Becoming a Green Champion means joining a legacy of volunteers who have made tangible differences, such as the remarkable effort during The Great British Spring Clean in March. Teams of dedicated volunteers, including the Vicar Water Country Park Ranger Team, Sherwood Forest Trust staff, Edwinstowe Litter Patrol, and residents came together to make a significant impact. Over 400 volunteers got involved this year and over 300 bags of rubbish were collected and then pick up by the Street Scene Team. In addition, well over 50 individuals went out litter picking, including young people who take part in volunteer litter picks on a regular basis. One volunteer has clocked up over 150 bags alone this year!

Great Big Green Week is the UK’s largest event for climate and nature, aiming to raise awareness, encourage communities to take action against climate change, and make sustainable changes for a positive impact long term.
