Thanking the district’s volunteers
Posted on: Thursday, June 1, 20232023 marks the 39th year of Volunteers’ Week (1-7 June) and Newark and Sherwood District Council will join thousands of charities and voluntary organisations recognising the contribution volunteers make across the UK.
This year’s theme is ‘Celebrate and Inspire’ and it is hoped that more people will be encouraged to get involved in volunteering in whatever way works for them.
The contribution of volunteers is often unseen and unrecognised by many, visible only through the incredible impact of their volunteering, so taking the time during Volunteers’ Week to celebrate their efforts and all they contribute to our local communities, the voluntary sector and society as a whole has never been more important.
This Volunteers’ Week, Newark and Sherwood District Council will be celebrating their volunteers, by hosting a thank you event taking resident volunteers on a trip to Belton House on Monday 5 June. Volunteers contribute to a wide range of activities including supporting the district council’s crop drop scheme, our parks and food clubs and opportunities at the National Civil War Centre and the Palace Theatre Newark.
Councillor Paul Peacock, Leader at Newark and Sherwood District Council, said: “Helping others has never been more important as we face the Cost of Living Crisis and I personally want to thank every single volunteer, no matter how big or small their contribution during the last twelve months, for their time and determination to help others in their community.
“For anyone wanting to volunteer but unsure on where to start, more information can be found on the District Council website or by speaking to Newark and Sherwood CVS.”
Newark and Sherwood CVS are hosting a Volunteers’ Week Recruitment Fair on Sunday 4 June at the RSPB Visitor Centre at Sherwood Forest in Edwinstowe, between 10am and 3pm, where residents can find out more about volunteering opportunities with local and national organisations and charities.
Madeleine O’ Sullivan, Chief Officer of Newark and Sherwood CVS, said: “Volunteers' Week is a chance to celebrate and recognise the fantastic contribution our volunteers make as well as giving other individuals who are considering volunteering the opportunity to see the difference they can make in their own community.”
