Chances to Celebrate District’s Heritage For Free This September

Posted on: Wednesday, August 31, 2022

Heritage Open Days is back this month with a range of free events taking place throughout the district from Friday 9 to Sunday 18 September. Bringing people together to celebrate their heritage, community and history, the nationwide festival offers the chance to experience local attractions for free as well as attending special events and exploring places which aren’t usually open to the public.

Councillor Rhona Holloway, Portfolio Holder for Economic Development and Visitors at Newark and Sherwood District Council, said: “Our district is so rich in heritage but I know that, living locally, it can be easy to ignore the attractions close to you in favour of day trips away. This is a great chance to appreciate the wealth of incredible history we have on our doorstep, and, at a time when the cost of living crisis is in the forefront of our minds, a free family day out is something to be treasured.”

In Newark, the National Civil War Centre will be putting on an exhibition of artworks which all depict different views of the town, some forgotten and some which can still be seen today. Entry to the museum will be free for the duration of the exhibition which runs from Saturday 10 to Saturday 17 September during the museum’s opening hours of 10am to 5pm, Wednesday to Saturday.

The next-door Palace Theatre is also getting involved with free backstage tours taking place on Wednesday 14 September, allowing visitors to uncover its more than 100 years of history from ground-breaking founder Emily Blagg to the many stars who’ve graced its stage.

On Saturday 17, Newark Castle Comes To Life: Astounding Inventions promises a sensational science show for all the family in the Castle grounds. Visitors will be able to discover weird and wonderful inventions from history with activities and entertainment for all ages throughout the day.

The town’s unique architecture is also being celebrated. Nottinghamshire Buildings Preservation Trust and Newark Civic Trust have come together with the High Streets Heritage Action Zone team at Newark and Sherwood District Council to present a fascinating demonstration of the skills required to maintain and repair historic buildings. Join a team of experts to learn these amazing secrets from 10am to 3pm on Saturday 17.

There will also be a variety of tours taking place throughout the town including some focusing on its Civil War history, its local inventors, Newark Cemetery and the Musical Instrument Craft Workshops at Newark College. Plus, Newark Town Hall and Art Gallery and Newark Masonic Hall and Museum will have special open days and there will be talks about Newark’s River Barge Builders throughout the week at Riverside Park.

The historic town of Southwell will be welcoming people on special tours of the stunning Southwell Minster as well as offering free entry to the National Trust’s Workhouse and Infirmary and the chance to visit the original Bramley Apple tree.

Elsewhere in the district, you can try your hand on the levers at Lowdham Signal Box, tour St Mary’s Church in Lowdham and visit the National Holocaust Centre and Museum in Laxton for free.
