Frequently asked questions about glass recycling

  • When will I get my kerbside glass recycling bin?

Bins are being delivered throughout March and April 2024.

Last year all households were able to opt in or out of receiving our new kerbside glass recycling bin. If you live in the majority of Newark and Sherwood, you were automatically opted into the scheme with the option of opting out if you wished to. Those residents who live in the area served by Recycling Ollerton and Boughton, had to opt into our scheme. These areas are Ollerton, Boughton, Walesby, Kirton, Edwinstowe, Eakring, Laxton, Egmanton, Bilsthorpe, Wellow and Rufford.

For those households who either automatically or voluntarily opted into the scheme, your bin will be delivered from Monday 4 March 2024. It will take us around 8 weeks to distribute all our new bins and we aim to have all deliveries complete during the week commencing Monday 22 April 2024.

  • When will kerbside glass recycling bin collections start?

They will start from Monday 8 April 2024 and collections will be every 8 weeks. You can check your bin collection day via our online bin collection day calendar.

  • What can go into my glass bin?

You can put glass bottles or jars of any colour in your new bin as long as they are clean and empty including:

    ·       food jars

    ·       drink bottles

    ·       toiletry jars, that have contained things such as face creams or aftershave

    ·       perfume bottles

    ·       reed diffuser bottles

    Important information:

    1. Items must be empty and clean.
    2. Please remove lids and seals where possible.
    3. Labels can stay on.

We cannot accept any other kind of glass including:

    ·       Oven-proof glass such as Pyrex

    ·       mirrors

    ·       drinking glasses

    ·       vases

    ·       nail varnish bottles

    ·       panes of window or greenhouse glass

    ·       microwave plates

    ·       spectacles

    ·       light bulbs and tubes

These items cannot be recycled as they are designed to withstand higher temperatures meaning they can’t be recycled with your normal household glass. If you have some of these items in good condition, they could be reused and you could donate them to a local charity. If these items are in poor condition, they should go in your general waste bin or taken to a local recycling centre.

Please do not contaminate your glass recycling bin with general household waste, or put glass in your silver recycling bin. If this happens, we could not collect your bins. You would have to remove the items and then wait for your next collection.

  • If I don’t have space for a bin, what can I do with my glass?

We still have a network of bottle banks around the district focused on the areas that need them most. You can find your nearest bottle bank here.

If it is not possible for you to recycle your glass, it can be placed in your green general waste bin.

  • If I opted out of the glass recycling scheme initially, can I change my mind?
  • My collection was missed, would you return?

If your bin was presented kerbside by 6am, and was not contaminated with unacceptable items, you can report your bin as missed or contact us.

  • What if my bin get lost or damaged?

If you need a replacement bin please complete our missing or lost bin online form.

If your bin is damaged, you can report this using our damaged resident bin online form so we can arrange a replacement. We may make a discretionary charge for missing or damaged bins.

  • I’ve just moved, how do I get a bin?

If you have recently moved into a new property and require a bin please complete our new property bin request online form. There is a charge for new bins, which covers the purchase and delivery costs associated with establishing the collection. If you’re a property developer and require a new bin for a property, you’ll need to contact us.

  • Can I have two glass recycling bins?

Unfortunately not at the moment, but if you have an excess of glass, you can take it to your nearest bottle bank or recycling centre or place it in your general waste green bin.

  • Can you help me put my bin out?

If you struggle to put your bin out for collection, we may be able to help. Complete our assisted collection request online form for an assessment.

  • Why is recycling glass important?

We want to recycle more and reduce the amount of glass that is sent to an ERF (Energy Recovery Facility), where glass is incinerated for energy recovery, because this is inefficient as glass is an infinitely recyclable material. The European glass federation, FEVE, estimates that every tonne of recycled glass produces 670 fewer kilograms of carbon dioxide than new glass.

A kerbside glass collection service is more convenient for residents and is something that a significant number of people wanted to see. Following our public survey, 93% of respondents want to see a kerbside glass recycling service in the district.

  • What happens to the glass we collect?

The glass will be colour separated by the latest colour separating technology with any piece of glass bigger than a 20p piece being identified and colour separated and then crushed and melted, before being reformed into a new product.

  • What else do you do to help the district become greener?

This new service is another part of our commitment to you, ensuring that we are doing all we can to create a cleaner and greener Newark and Sherwood. Over the past few years, we have also:

    ·       Planted or given away over 22,000 new trees (and we will continue to plant more!)

    ·       Organised nine days of action targeting cleaner, safer and greener issues in different villages and towns (with more planned too!)

    ·       Introduced electric vehicles to our fleet (in fact we will be using even more electric vehicles in the future too!)

    ·       Began installing solar PV panels on our corporate and leisure buildings (with more to come!)

    ·       Joined in with national campaigns such as The Great British Spring Clean, Recycling Week and No Mow May (cutting back on mowing some of our green spaces so wildflowers can bloom to help our pollinating insect residents!)

    ·       Committed £55,000 towards ensuring housing developers work with licensed and experienced ecologists when building new homes.

    ·       Grown our garden waste recycling service with over 17,000 households now having their garden waste collected from their doorstep.

    ·       Collected 1,599 fly-tips and issued over 2,000 fixed penalty notices for environmental crimes in the last year alone!

    ·       Hit our highest ever recycling rate during 2023 (and are striving to better that with our kerbside glass recycling service!)

  • I received a letter about this service last year

That’s great! In July 2023 we wrote to all residents who live in Newark and Sherwood, to find out who will be using our service. This has allowed us to put a plan in place for our collection rounds. If you live in, or have friends in, certain areas in the north-west of our district (around Ollerton, Boughton, Edwinstowe, Bilsthorpe and Eakring for example), you / they will have received a different letter from us because some kerbside glass provision is offered there already. If you live in this area, you can find some more information about this service, which is provided by Recycling Ollerton and Boughton (ROB), on their website. Copies of the letters we issued can be found below:
