Council seeks tenant representatives to help shape housing services
Posted on: Wednesday, May 13, 2026Newark and Sherwood District Council is inviting tenants from across the district to put themselves forward as Tenant Engagement Champions, a brand‑new group of volunteers who will help ensure that real tenant voices help shape the future of the councils housing services.
Tenant Engagement Champions will act as a direct link between tenants and the Council, sharing the day‑to‑day experiences that really help paint a picture of what works well and what could be improved. Champions will listen to other tenants, take part in discussions about repairs, neighbourhoods, communication and wider housing services, and work alongside councillors, officers and other tenants to support changes.
Applicants don’t need any special skills or background to apply. The Council is simply looking for people who care about improving services and strengthening communities. Training, support and guidance are provided every step of the way.
In total, ten Tenant Engagement Champions will be recruited. From these, five will also be invited to join the Tenant Board, a group where tenants work alongside councillors and housing staff to look at performance, set priorities and help shape decisions at a more strategic level. It’s an opportunity for tenants to have real influence on how services are delivered.
The roles are voluntary, and most tenants can expect to give around two hours a month. Reasonable expenses can be claimed, and support will be available for anyone who needs help accessing meetings or information.
Cllr Lee Brazier, Portfolio Holder for Housing at Newark and Sherwood District Council, said: “We know that the best and most meaningful ideas come directly from our tenants. This is a brilliant opportunity for anyone who wants to make a difference in their community. You don’t need to be an expert, you just need to be willing to share your experiences.”
Applications close at midnight on Wednesday 27 May. Shortlisting will take place the following week, with friendly, informal interviews held on 11 and 12 June. All applicants will hear back by the end of June, and those selected will be invited to a welcome meeting and introductory workshop in July.
