Newark and Sherwood District Council will invest over £500,000 to refurbish its temporary accommodation at Wellow Green, Ollerton, improving the building and reducing energy costs.

The works will modernise the ten‑bungalow site, which provides interim accommodation for people experiencing homelessness, ensuring it is safer, warmer, and more affordable to live in.

The upgrades respond directly to feedback from residents. Improvements will include:

  • New heating systems and upgraded insulation.
  • External wall improvements and energy‑efficiency measures.
  • Solar panels with battery storage to reduce electricity bills.
  • New kitchens, bathrooms, and flooring.
  • CCTV installation to improve safety.
  • 4G signal boosters to improve mobile connectivity.

Once complete, the refurbishment will significantly improve energy performance, helping residents better manage household costs while living at Wellow Green.

Councillor Lee Brazier, Portfolio Holder for Housing at Newark and Sherwood District Council, said: “This investment ensures that our temporary accommodation at Wellow Green is safe, comfortable, and affordable. By refurbishing Wellow Green, we will be improving the quality of life for residents, reducing energy costs, and keeping much‑needed temporary accommodation available. As a council we are committed to working with partner councils, as we move towards Local Government Reorganisation, to ensure that temporary accommodation is a recognised priority for the new authority.”

The Council explored a range of alternatives, including rebuilding the site, selling it, or using other properties. Refurbishment was chosen as the most practical, cost‑effective, and deliverable option, allowing the Council to improve standards quickly while retaining essential local provision.

Work is planned to be carried out in phases, so the scheme remains open during the duration of the improvement programme, minimising disruption, and ensuring temporary accommodation remains available for those who need it.

The investment supports the Council’s wider commitment to improving housing standards, wellbeing, and safety, while reducing any reliance on hotel or bed‑and‑breakfast placements.
