Free Creative Heritage Workshop to Celebrate the History of our Local Communities
Posted on: Tuesday, October 22, 2024Residents are invited to join a unique and engaging workshop led by the Open Doors team, from the National Civil War Centre, at Edwinstowe Library on Tuesday 29 October, 10.30am to 12.30pm.
This free event is for participants of all ages and abilities to create their own textile artwork using fabric photographs from the extensive museum collection.
Attendees will have the chance to explore the rich history of mining in Ollerton, Edwinstowe, and Bilsthorpe through the images sourced. This creative opportunity offers a fascinating glimpse into the past and serving as perfect inspiration for the textile creations. Participants can colour, stitch, and style their own images to take home, with all materials provided for the session.
Councillor Rowan Cozens, Portfolio Holder for Heritage, Culture and the Arts at Newark and Sherwood District Council, explains the idea behind the workshops, “This is a wonderful opportunity for local residents to explore images from our archives, celebrate our local heritage and to do something creative.
“Local Edwinstowe, and surrounding area, residents can explore the local mining heritage. The pictures that have been chosen show the men who worked in the mines through to the equipment they used. We know the local communities are proud of their industrial heritage, and, at District Council, we want to make sure that this heritage is celebrated and not forgotten.”
This workshop is part of Open Doors, a three-year programme of events organised by Newark and Sherwood District Council and funded by Arts Council England. Its aim is to increase creative opportunities for young people and under-served groups and become a focal point for culture across Newark and Sherwood.
Bring your creativity to Edwinstowe Library, Tuesday 29 October, 10.30am to 12.30pm, and leave with a piece of textile art about your local history. No booking or experience necessary, just show up with the desire to join in!
