Changes are coming to the way we recycle!

Posted on: Tuesday, March 10, 2026

Big changes are coming to the recycling service in Newark and Sherwood, making it easier for residents to recycle more and reduce waste. These improvements are part of national plans to ensure that everyone, wherever they live, can recycle the same materials - making recycling simpler and more consistent.

From 1 April 2026 additional items will be accepted in silver bin collections. These new materials add to the district’s current kerbside recycling service, meaning households will be able to add even more of their everyday recycles into their silver bin.

More detailed guidance about what will be able to go into silver bins will be shared in coming weeks, well ahead of the first collection that includes these added materials.

To make sure everyone has the information they need, the District Council will also be sending clear guidance to every household explaining exactly what can and cannot be recycled in the silver bin. This means that residents who may not have access to online information will still receive full details ahead of the changes coming into effect.

Until then, residents should continue recycling as they normally do and can check the current guidelines on our website at www.newark-sherwooddc.gov.uk/silver-bin

This positive change supports the Government’s Simpler Recycling policy, which aims to make recycling collections more consistent across England, so everyone can recycle the same core materials. It will help reduce confusion and improve recycling rates.

Residents living in flats can also take part using their communal recycling bins, which will be clearly marked.

Councillor Simon Forde, Portfolio Holder for Climate and the Environment, said: “We are really pleased that from April this year we can put even more items to our existing recycling service. While these additions aren’t in place yet, we want residents to know that these improvements are coming and that they will make a real difference.

“We know recycling can be confusing with different parts of the country having different guidelines but with these new changes it will be easier for people to recycle from home. Before April we will be sharing simple, clear information so everyone knows exactly what’s being added to their current service. This is a really positive step forward, and we’re looking forward to helping residents recycle even more stuff.”
