Community Grant Scheme returns to support local projects

Posted on: Monday, April 13, 2026

Community groups across Newark and Sherwood are being encouraged to bring forward their ideas as Newark and Sherwood District Council opens its Community Grant Scheme for 2026/2027.

The scheme provides funding of up to £20,000 for community groups, charities and eligible Parish Councils, helping them deliver projects that make a positive difference for people living in the district.

Grants are available to support a wide range of initiatives, from practical improvements to local spaces to new activities and services for residents. To be eligible, projects must be based within Newark and Sherwood, show a clear local need and demonstrate how they support the Council’s Community Plan ambitions. Applications will also need to include supporting financial information.

Extra weighting will be given for projects whose applications can show they:

  • Contribute to overcoming the cost-of-living crisis
  • Contribute to public protection by reducing crime or antisocial behaviour
  • Improve biodiversity or contribute to reducing climate change
  • Projects that can demonstrate match funding (above £5k).

Full details about who can apply and how the scheme works are available on the Council’s website at: https://www.newark-sherwooddc.gov.uk/communityfunding/

Applications must be submitted by 5pm on Friday 15 May.

The previous funding round saw 20 organisations supported through the scheme during 2025/26. Funding helped deliver a diverse range of projects, including new and expanded youth activities, improved community facilities, greater accessibility in local spaces, and initiatives focused on wellbeing, inclusion and skills development.

Councillor Paul Taylor, Portfolio Holder for Public Protection and Community Relations at Newark and Sherwood District Council, said: “Community organisations play a crucial role in supporting residents and bringing people together, and we are proud to be able to help them turn their ideas into reality. Over the past year, funding from this scheme has helped a wide variety of groups improve local spaces, develop activities for young people, and deliver projects that support health, skills and community life across the district.

“As we open applications for 2026/27, we want to hear from groups with ideas that respond to local needs and help make a positive difference in their communities. Whether it’s tackling current challenges or investing in long‑term improvements, this scheme is designed to support projects that benefit residents and strengthen our neighbourhoods.”

Applicants are encouraged to contact the District Council’s Community Development team by emailing communityengagement@newark-sherwooddc.gov.uk or calling 01636 650 000 if they require advice or support with their application.
