Step Into History at the National Civil War Centre – A Day Out Like No Other
Posted on: Tuesday, November 11, 2025The National Civil War Centre in Newark invites visitors to explore one of the most fascinating periods in British history. Open Tuesdays to Saturdays, 10am – 4pm, the Centre offers an immersive experience that sweeps you into a remarkable story of superstitions, sibling rivalry, and seismic change that shaped the country we live in today. And it is completely free for Newark and Sherwood residents!
From hands-on interactives to jaw-dropping artefacts, there’s something for everyone:
- Interactive fun like our Pikes and Ladders board game and touch screens.
- Replica objects to handle (and for children to play with!).
- The Threads of Time Trail, taking you out into Newark Town Centre to spot nine hidden artefacts.
- A short film bringing the drama of Civil War sieges to life.
- Treasures to amaze, including a giant mammoth tooth, a spooky Roman skeleton, shiny armour and swords, and even a magical bottle once used to keep witches away.
- Audio tours and object trails available in English, Polish and Arabic.
The Centre is also home to the Newark Museum, showcasing Newark’s local history. These galleries offer something a little bit different and give visitors an insight into the local history of our wonderful town.
And for families with children, the Centre has a huge amount on offer, including a popular dressing-up area with replica costumes and weapons, puppet companions of Prince Rupert’s dog Boye or Cromwell’s horse Blackjack to join you on your journey and The Toys Through Time Trail, giving children toys from bygone eras – from skipping ropes and spinning tops to tin robots and dial-up phones
The award-winning Kids in Museums Family Standard Café, is open daily serving homemade food, cakes and drinks as well so visitors can make even more of their visit!
With pay-and-display parking opposite and easy access from Newark Northgate and Newark Castle stations, the Centre is perfectly placed for a great day out.

The Centre also runs a number of events with something for everyone! The mini-museum sessions are held on Thursdays between 10.30am and 11.30am and offer under 5s the chance to enjoy a weekly dose of music, discovery, creativity and giggles with these hands-on sessions! The historical talks programme provides history enthusiasts and learners with an opportunity hear more from experts in the field. The Family Saturday events offer an opportunity for families to come along (first Saturday of every month) and enjoy a whole host of free activities within the Centre too.
