New Palace Theatre Grant Fund Application Window Open
Posted on: Tuesday, March 18, 2025Applications for the Our Past, Your Future fund are now open until 26 May 2025 to those aged 16 to 25 and living within Newark and Sherwood who are looking to pursue a career in the arts, whether performing, writing, directing or technical.
As a beacon for arts and culture in Newark, the Palace Theatre is keen to support young people and kickstart their career journey. The fund will award a £1500 grant each year to one successful applicant to use towards course fees or living expenses, with the potential for a second, discretionary award of £250 to £500.
It is hoped the scheme will also give back to the town, with a stipulation that the successful applicant is able and willing to offer something to other young people in Newark after the completion of their course.
Councillor Rowan Cozens, Portfolio Holder for Heritage and the Arts at Newark and Sherwood District Council said, “Newark really is a treasure trove of talent. I’m incredibly keen to do all we can to support your young people and give them a great start in their arts and culture career. Whether that be on the stage performing, behind a technical desk or with pen in hand, opportunities are endless in the most joyful of career options. It is my hope that this fund will help Newark’s future stars shine bright and make the dreams of local young people that much more achievable.”
Last year Tommy-Lee Storr was awarded the main prize of £1500 and he used the money to support his BA (Hons) in Musical Theatre at the prestigious Emil Dale Academy. Tommy-Lee has already made a strong impact in Newark’s art scene, taking part in Newark Amateur Operatic Society’s productions from age 11 onwards, training at the local Elaine Varney School of Dance and, more recently, leading classes himself at Studio29 and supporting Market Place events with Newark Town Council.
Theatre sponsors Tallents Solicitors have been an instrumental partner in the project and said: “The Palace Theatre has been an important part of the Newark community we all live in for over 100 years, with an exceptional pedigree in both welcoming, encouraging and inspiring creative talent in our market town. Tallents Solicitors is very proud to have been a Principal Sponsor of the Palace Theatre Newark for many years, and to be their Centenary Sponsor as they continue to bring entertainment to our community.
“With our continuing support, we are delighted to be able to help the Palace Theatre Newark now reach out to the local community and encourage applications from anyone in need of a grant to enable them to become involved in the wonderful world of the arts.
“We look forward to seeing how this innovative and supportive arts programme will benefit the creative and talented people in our community as they embark on a fulfilling creative career.”
