Newark and Sherwood wraps up a week of celebrating local volunteers
Posted on: Monday, June 9, 2025Newark and Sherwood District Council has concluded a heartfelt Volunteers’ Thank You Week (2-8 June 2025), celebrating the incredible individuals and groups who give their time and energy to support our communities.
As part of the national campaign led by the National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO), the District Council hosted a series of appreciation events, in partnership with Your CVS, across the district to recognise the vital role volunteers play in making Newark and Sherwood a better place to live
Throughout the week, volunteers were invited to enjoy afternoon teas, complete with refreshments and live performances by vintage vocalist Jayne Darling. These events were held in both Balderton and Clipstone. The celebrations concluded on Saturday, 7 June, with a special Volunteer Thank You Day at Thoresby Park, featuring a birds of prey experience and a community picnic in the Walled Garden.
The District Council’s Community Development team and staff at Your CVS also took to the road, hand-delivering personalised thank you cards to volunteer groups across the district – a small gesture to show a big appreciation.
In addition, the District Council and Your CVS co-hosted a bustling Volunteer Fair on Friday 6 June at the RSPB Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre. The event brought together local charities, community groups, and residents eager to explore new ways to give back.
Councillor Paul Peacock, Leader of Newark and Sherwood District Council, said: “This week has been a wonderful celebration of the people who make our communities stronger, kinder, and more connected. We’re incredibly grateful to every volunteer who gives their time to help others. Volunteers are the backbone of our community, and their selfless contributions have a profound impact on the lives of many. Their dedication and hard work inspire us all to be better and do better. We cannot thank them enough for their unwavering support and commitment to making Newark and Sherwood a better place for everyone."
Louise Casey-Simpson, CEO of Your CVS, said: "As we celebrate Volunteers Week, I want to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude to all our dedicated volunteers. It's been fantastic to take the time this week to celebrate you all. Your passion and commitment are the driving force behind our community's success. Volunteers not only enrich our projects but also strengthen the bonds within our community, reminding us of the incredible impact we can make together. Thank you for your unwavering support and for making a difference in the lives of those around you."
Volunteering opportunities were also highlighted at some of the district’s most iconic cultural venues, including the National Civil War Centre, the Palace Theatre, and Newark Castle - all of which rely on the dedication of volunteers to bring history and the arts to life for visitors.
Councillor Rowan Cozens, Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Heritage, Culture and the Arts at Newark and Sherwood District Council, said: “The Palace Theatre, National Civil War Centre, and Newark Castle all benefit enormously from the dedication of our volunteers. Their support is the backbone of our daily operations. Whether they’re welcoming guests, guiding tours, or assisting behind the scenes, their enthusiasm and generosity shine through in everything they do. I’m incredibly grateful for the time and energy they give so willingly – their contribution truly makes a difference.”
Carol Wilkinson, a volunteer at the National Civil War Centre, said: “I love meeting the general public and helping them to enjoy the museum. The main joy for me is that I also have the opportunity of promoting our wonderful town! Volunteering is part of my DNA; I have done it all of my life.”
