Celebrate the Rest of Summer in Newark and Sherwood with Heritage, Creativity, and Family Fun

Posted on: Monday, September 1, 2025

As summer comes to a close, Newark and Sherwood is still alive with colour, culture, and curiosity thanks to an exciting programme of events from the National Civil War Centre. Whether you're looking to get hands-on with history, unleash your creativity, or enjoy quality time with family, there’s still plenty to discover before the season ends.

Back by popular demand, Playhem! runs until 30 August, offering joyful, messy play sessions that spark imagination and laughter for young visitors. Families can also explore the Toys Through Time Trail, where interactive discovery bags reveal how children played throughout history. Meanwhile, the Kids in Museums Trail invites little explorers to help the animals of Grimwood choose a new Mayor by solving clues hidden across the museum.

Art lovers and curious minds will enjoy Tuesday Wanders, a weekly creative drop-in with Open Doors’ Artist in Residence, Amelia Daiz. Held every Tuesday, these sessions invite visitors to sketch, write poetry, take photos, and explore their surroundings in new ways.

History enthusiasts can enjoy one of two captivating walking tours, that alternate every Saturday at 1pm. Choose between Besieged, But Never Beaten, which explores Newark’s dramatic Civil War stories, or Newark Through Time, a journey through the Anglo-Saxon, Medieval, Georgian, and Victorian eras. Tickets cost just £6 per person, but spaces are limited.

Carys Coulton-Jones, business manager for Heritage and Culture at Newark and Sherwood District Council said:

“This summer, Newark and Sherwood has been bursting with creativity, curiosity, and good old-fashioned fun!  It’s the perfect chance to dive into our local heritage and make memories for the rest of this summer.”

While there are no shows at the Palace Theatre during August, visitors can still enjoy a relaxing lunch or coffee break at Café Nineteen 20, the perfect pit stop during a day of exploring.

Other highlights include the Threads of Time Trail, the Kiddey Trail and the Mining for Stories exhibition. Not forgetting the National Civil War Centre itself, which is free to all Newark and Sherwood residents and all under 25s.

With many events free and open to all ages, now is the perfect time to explore, create, and connect. To find out more, visit National Civil War Centre, Newark to find out more.
