Residents and businesses affected by flooding after Storm Henk can apply now for grants.
Posted on: Thursday, January 18, 2024Following the announcement that the UK government will be providing funding for households and business owners affected by Storm Henk, applications are now open. Grants through the Flood Recovery Framework are available to homes and businesses that have been flooded.
Newark and Sherwood District Council has created a single online form for residents whose homes have been affected to complete through their website or by visiting: www.newark-sherwooddc.gov.uk/flooding/
A £500 grant is available for any household where the living accommodation has been flooded or the home has been left uninhabitable, for example where utilities have been cut off.
In addition, households may be eligible for the Council Tax Discount scheme. Under this scheme, affected eligible households will be given a 100% discount on their Council Tax for at least 3 months.
Nottinghamshire County Council are also offering affected households a £120 one-off hardship payment.
All these payments can be applied for through the same online form or, if getting online is a problem, by calling Newark and Sherwood District Council on 01636 650 000 from 9.00am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, for support.
“Following on from Storm Babet, our residents and businesses once again face real hardship as a result of flooding after Storm Henk,” states Councillor Paul Peacock, Leader of Newark and Sherwood District Council, “The extent of the flooding this time has seen communities not previously affected being hit hard, and those who were recovering from the damage resulting from Storm Babet being hit again by this storm. Our officers have been working to try and help all of our communities, providing emergency food and rest centres where required. I am hugely proud of how our teams have worked with local communities to help them where possible.”
Affected Businesses are entitled to financial support as well. A separate form can also be www.newark-sherwooddc.gov.uk/flooding/. This must be completed for business owners to claim under the Government’s Flood Recovery Framework. Subject to eligibility criteria, the schemes available to affected businesses are:
- Business Rates Relief Scheme - This is 100% relief on your Business Rates for a period of at least 3 months. To receive this support, flood water must have entered the property, or the flooding seriously impacted upon the business’s ability to trade from the property during the recent Storm Henk.
- Business Recovery Grant - This is a grant payment of £2,500 for those badly affected by the recent Storm Henk. In most cases, this will be similar criteria to the Business Rate Relief Scheme above.
- Nottinghamshire County Council Hardship Grant - The Nottinghamshire Floods Hardship Fund supports residents and businesses affected by flooding. Small or micro businesses with up to 49 employees whose premises have flooded will be eligible for a payment of £300.
