Veterans treated to tea at the Town Hall

The event helped to open a weekend of Remembrance events and services across the district. It was attended by around 80 veterans and service personnel covering a wide range of ages and experiences.

The veterans were treated to a handsome spread of tea and cakes, supplied by Gadsby’s of Southwell and The Real Milk Company. There was also 1940s entertainment laid on which helped add to the overall atmosphere.

1940s singer, Jayne Darling, entertained the guests with a repertoire of hits from the 40s. Veteran, Terry Trickett, wanted to pass on his thanks to the organisers, saying, “Just a superb afternoon with Jayne and her variety of songs adding to the occasion. Please pass on Grateful thanks to all involved in this outstanding afternoon.”

Gadsby’s of Southwell who provided the cakes, said, “We are delighted to make a donation to the Veterans Afternoon Tea, we sincerely hope that the veterans enjoy their gathering and the lovely food being put on for them.”

“It’s important that as each year passes we continue to remember the sacrifices made by our Armed Forces in the past. Anyone who has served their country deserves our respect and admiration,” explains Councillor Neil Ross, Armed Forces Champion for Newark and Sherwood District Council.

“As a council, we do whatever we can to support veterans, including making our District Council a supportive environment for ex-service personnel to work. We are extremely proud to have signed up to the Armed Forces Covenant and this year to have been awarded a Boots and Beret award for our work with veterans who work for us. This afternoon was a chance for us to extend this support to the wider district and to show that we do care.

“It was a joy to see veterans from across the district and of all ages coming together to enjoy this moment together.”

Newark and Sherwood District Council have signed up to the Armed Forces Covenant which is a promise from the nation that those who serve, or have served, and their families, are treated fairly. An important element of this is to encourage local communities to develop a relationship with the armed forces community in Newark and Sherwood. This includes serving members of the armed forces, their families and veterans.
