Last chance for Christmas tree collections
Posted on: Wednesday, January 18, 2023Christmas tree collections have begun, and Newark and Sherwood District Council is reminding residents that next week is the last chance to book the service.
Newark and Sherwood District Council’s Waste Management team can collect your real tree for a £5 fee. We cannot give an exact date for collection but the week commencing 23 January is the last week of collections. To book your collection go to: https://www.newark-sherwooddc.gov.uk/recycling/christmas-tree-recycling/
Through this scheme not only is the collection fee reinvested back into the community, but so will the trees themselves. All the money collected this year will be offered to community groups for conservation work, which could include tree and hedgerow planting. The collected Christmas trees themselves are taken for recycling and shredded for composting, turning waste into a green resource.
This year over 430 trees have been booked to be collected through the service.
Councillor Roger Jackson, Portfolio Holder for Cleaner, Safer, Greener at Newark and Sherwood District Council, said: “I’m thrilled to see this service has been well received for yet another year. Our crews have been busy collecting trees since the beginning of January, and I encourage anyone who still hasn’t got around to booking their collection to do so this week.
“Not only does this service save you the trouble of disposing of your tree yourself, but it also benefits the community. We all want to work towards a cleaner, safer, greener Newark and Sherwood, and what a great way to kick off your new year doing something sustainable for the district!”
If residents pay for a garden waste collection service, they can also cut their real trees and place them in their garden waste bin for recycling, remembering that the lid must be able to close.
All real trees can also be taken to any household recycling centre in the district.
Councillor Roger Jackson continues: “I also want to remind residents to log their sustainable actions, such as recycling their Christmas waste, on the Green Rewards platform. You can earn Green Points for your activities, and the more ‘Green Points’ you earn the more chance you have to win a £20 voucher to spend locally.
“If you have made a resolution to behave more sustainably in 2023 Green Rewards is a fantastic platform to motivate and inspire you to keep making small changes that can have a big impact!”
