District Council to protect important pathway across River Trent
Posted on: Wednesday, February 22, 2023Newark and Sherwood District Council has committed to undertake a series of works to ensure the Jubilee Bridge, as an essential pathway across the River Trent at Newark, is well maintained and future proofed for residents and commuters to use in the years to come.
The Jubilee Bridge provides access from the Maltings Retail Park and Aldi to Waitrose and the Newark Castle train station. Installed as part of Queen Elizabeth II’s Golden Jubilee celebrations in 2002, the Jubilee Bridge acts as one of the principal pedestrian crossing points across the River Trent, providing a vital and safe pathway for commuters and residents without access to a car.
A specialist consultant has been commissioned to survey the Bridge to ensure it completes a full and thorough refurbishment. When complete, final detailed proposals will then be presented to Newark and Sherwood District Council’s Cabinet with the option to upgrade the existing approach ramp to ensure the bridge is fit for purpose and safe for future use.
Councillor Rhona Holloway, Portfolio Holder for Economic Development and Visitors at Newark and Sherwood District Council, said: “The Jubilee Bridge is a key asset for providing a safe pathway over the River Trent for those commuting, as well as residents who don’t have access to a car.
“We are committed to doing all we can to make sure the Bridge is maintained so it can remain an important infrastructure for connecting our town for the benefit of Newark residents, commuters and businesses.”
