Winter holiday activities for young people prove great success

This winter Newark and Sherwood District Council supported Nottinghamshire County Council to deliver the Department for Education Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) Programme.

The Notts Winterfest scheme was set up to provide support for children and young people aged between 5 and 16 who are in receipt of benefits-related free school meals.

The District Council supported three of the programmes including events at the Palace Theatre, Active4Today’s leisure centres and the Social Action Hub. They also supported holiday camp providers, Koala Klubs, with trips for young people to Rufford County Park.

There was a great turn out for the activities with more than 300 spaces for children to fill up!

All places were booked at the Palace Theatre, Newark where young people were treated to craft activities, a lovely hot lunch and a two hour festive panto performance of Dick Wittington and His Cat!

For the activities at the Social Action Hub, young people were provided with a hot lunch and enjoyed some exciting festive games.

Active4Today hosted a jam-packed event full of activities including swimming and multi-sports. Again, they were also treated to a lovely hot lunch, ideal in this cold weather!

Councillor David Lloyd, Leader of Newark and Sherwood District Council, said: “It’s great that the HAF Programme returned this winter and the turnout was brilliant. It was an opportunity for parents and carers in the community to get that little bit of extra support in the holidays.   I’m glad to see so many children enjoying a range of activities offered by the District Council in the lead up to Christmas.”
