Breastfeeding friendly

We’re a breastfeeding friendly organisation since 2016. That means we provide a welcoming, clean and comfortable environment for breastfeeding mums where the public have access to the Council's buildings.

Our Health Improvement Officer works with Nottinghamshire County Council to identify and support local breastfeeding friendly places within the Newark and Sherwood district.

If you’re a mum in Newark and Sherwood who’s had a positive breastfeeding experience in a local business, let us know by emailing wellbeing@newark-sherwooddc.gov.uk with the name of the business, road name and area and we’ll get in touch to invite the business on board.

Do you want your business to be breastfeeding friendly?

We worked with Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust, Nottinghamshire County Council and all local and district councils to launch breastfeeding friendly accreditation (PDF File, 1,124kb). It encourages businesses and venues within Nottinghamshire to sign up as part of action to provide a more welcoming and positive environment for breastfeeding mothers. Venues taking part display stickers letting people know they are welcome to breastfeed, as well as a certificate.

Many mothers feel that breastfeeding is viewed as socially unacceptable in public, often telling us that fear of breastfeeding in public is a barrier to them either starting or continuing to breastfeed. We want to change this.

If you own a business you can help by:

  • being a welcoming premises for mothers wanting a positive and comfortable environment to feed their child
  • supporting your staff returning from maternity leave
  • registering as a breastfeeding friendly business

To apply, complete the BFF self-assessment form (PDF File, 376kb) and email it to wellbeing@newark-sherwooddc.gov.uk.
