Beauty treatments

If you’re planning to offer certain beauty treatments to members of the public you’ll need to apply for a licence from us.

These include:

  • massage
  • electric treatment
  • radiant heat, light or electric vapour treatment
  • sauna or other baths for therapeutic treatment
  • other similar treatments including laser/ intense pulse light (IPL) treatment and UV light treatments
  • UV tanning equipment including sunbeds and sunshowers
  • skin piercing and tattoos

Treatments like tooth whitening can only be administered by a qualified dental nurse or dental practitioner.

Making an application

To apply, renew or transfer your existing licence, complete and return the appropriate application form below.

Please pay online (go to page 4/5 of the online payment system) and write your receipt number on your application form or in your email. You can return your form by post to Environmental Health, Newark and Sherwood District Council, Castle House, Great North Road, Newark, Notts NG24 1BY or email it to environmental.health@newark-sherwooddc.gov.uk

Please allow six weeks from receipt of your application for it to be processed. We consult local councillors, the police and contact any referees stated on the application prior to granting the licence.

If you have a new therapist start at the salon before your licence is due to be renewed, please complete the new therapist form (PDF File, 17kb) and return to us by either post or email.

Sunbeds / sun showers regulations

New regulations from April 2011 impose additional duties on sunbed businesses through the Sunbeds (Regulation) Act 2010. Download guidance notes on these regulations (PDF File, 426kb) 

Lasers and intense pulse light treatment regulations

As of the 1 October 2010 providers in England of Class 3B and 4 Lasers and intense pulse light treatments for non-surgical procedures such as hair removal and tattoo removal no longer have to be registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

These providers are now regulated by the local authority. Providers within Nottinghamshire need to be licensed with their local authorities to carry out any treatment that uses a Class 3B and 4 laser or an intense pulse light system.
