National Civil War Centre Commemorates Armistice Day with New Exhibition

Posted on: Thursday, November 7, 2024

A new remembrance exhibition to commemorate Armistice Day is now available for residents to view at the National Civil War Centre, Newark Museum.

Armistice Day also known as Remembrance Day is commemorated each year in the UK with a two-minute silence on 11 November and marks the agreement which brought the First World War to an end.

The exhibition includes fascinating objects such as a medal set and caps from the First World War, alongside a model of Newark Marketplace with soldiers embarking for France in 1914.

The display also includes invaluable documents of a Newark solider who served in the war.  This information helps to tell his story and experiences during his time serving.

Councillor Rowan Cozens, Deputy Leader of Newark and Sherwood District Council and Portfolio Holder for Heritage, Culture, and the Arts, said: “I am delighted we are able to commemorate Armistice Day by providing this exhibition, it gives residents a real insight into what life was like during the First World War.”

“It’s only right that we remember those who served our country, and honour the sacrifices made to defend our Nation.”

“As a District Council we will continue to do what we can to support those in the armed forces both in our district, and those working at the Council enabling them to have care and support when they need it most.”

Councillor Neil Ross, Armed Forces Champion at Newark and Sherwood District Council said: “I am really looking forward to visiting these new displays which act as a poignant reminder of all those who have, and are still serving, in the armed forces."

"Entry to the National Civil War Centre is free for Newark and Sherwood residents, so it provides the perfect place for some quiet contemplation or to share with your family to ensure the efforts of those who have fought for our Country are never forgotten.”

The exhibition will be available to view at the museum until December 2024, with free entry for all Newark and Sherwood residents. The National Civil War Centre is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10am until 4pm, with a variety of galleries and activities available for the whole family to enjoy.
