Newark and Sherwood District Council appointed a new Chair and Vice-Chair during the Annual Council meeting on Tuesday 21 May.

Nominations were invited for the Chair by Councillor Celia Brooks as her final duty as Chair.  Councillor Jean Hall was nominated by Councillor Rowan Cozens, Deputy Leader of Newark and Sherwood District Council and seconded by Councillor Susan Crosby. She was then elected unanimously by council members. She will remain in office for the coming year.

Southwell Leisure Centre is owned by the Southwell Leisure Centre Trust. The District Council took over the management of the Centre in October 2021 because the Trust could not afford to run and maintain it. The centre is over 60 years old, and the main swimming pool had to be closed in October 2023 due to a substantial leakage of water of almost 9,000 litres per day caused by heavily corroded pipework.

On 29 October 2023, the main pool at Southwell Leisure Centre was closed. The pool was leaking 9,000 litres of water a day and the safety of users of the pool could not be guaranteed. Southwell Leisure Centre Trust, the owners of the leisure centre, supported the closure of the pool.
