Residents affected by Storm Henk can book a FREE bulky waste collection for flood-damaged items

Newark and Sherwood District Council is continuing to clear and clean up areas affected by Storm Henk.

Over the past few days, the District Council’s Environmental Team have been working to clean roads and footpaths of debris following Storm Henk and have been able to tackle the vast majority of areas affected. The waste crews have also been out and collected a number of bins that had to be missed due to the flooding.

Whilst most of the areas affected have been visited, officers are still out cleaning and collecting bins and there are still areas that are not accessible, and these will be visited as soon as it is safe to do so.

Residents who need help disposing of large household items that have been damaged by the flooding can book a FREE bulky waste collection with the District Council. Bookings must be made by calling 01636 650000 and not on the Council’s website.

If you have a bulky waste collection for your flood-damaged items booked, please make sure to leave the waste outside and on the edge of your property to ensure our crews know which waste to collect. A specific collection day cannot be guaranteed.

Please note that upholstery and electrical items must be collected separately due to the way they are disposed of and should be kept separate if you have a mix of items being collected.

Items that can be collected as bulky waste include:

  • armchairs
  • sofas
  • bed frames
  • mattress
  • extra bags of refuse
  • washing machines
  • microwaves

Bulky flood-damaged waste items that cannot be collected are:

  • commercial fridges and freezers
  • vehicle parts, soil, construction material such as bricks, rubble, tiles bathroom/kitchen fittings
  • hazardous waste - please consult a specialist contractor
  • large metal items, such as radiators/boilers/garage doors
  • pianos and organs
  • large glass items such as shower screens or glass dining tables (items with small pieces of glass will be accepted if they are covered with cardboard)

Flood wardens are arranging for aqua-sacs to be collected from specified locations in communities and residents can also have any remaining aqua-sacs collected through the free bulky waste collections. Please ring 01636 650000 to book the collection. Residents are encouraged to save any unused aqua-sacs for future use and store them in a dry place.

Any road cleaning issues can be reported to the District Council via a form on their website or by calling 01636 650000. Blocked drains can be reported to Nottinghamshire County Council Highways online or by calling 0300 500 8080 and potholes can be reported on the same number or on the County Council website.
