Recycle Your Christmas Tree with the District Council

Posted on: Friday, December 20, 2024

The spirit of Christmas is all about giving so once your Christmas tree has finished providing joy in your home, why not give back to the environment by recycling it! Newark and Sherwood District Council’s Christmas Tree Recycling Scheme is back for another year and residents can book a collection now.

The scheme has been running successfully for many years and repurposes your tree, after chipping, into path surfacing, mulch on shrubs beds and more across the district’s parks and green spaces.

Collections of real trees can be booked for just £5 and residents using the service are asked to safely leave their trees out from 13 January as they will be picked up in the three weeks following this date.

The fees collected for the service will be reinvested back into the community, with proceeds from previous years being used to plant more trees locally as well as being offered to community groups for conservation work, including tree and hedgerow planting.

Councillor Simon Forde, Portfolio Holder for Climate and the Environment at Newark and Sherwood District Council, said: “Many of us will be making New Year’s resolutions over the next few weeks and while it’s great to promise something personal for yourself, this is a fantastic chance to embrace a more sustainable way of living.

Recycling your Christmas tree, as well as taking away the hassle of disposal, will set you on the right path for doing so and you’ll be able to enjoy the results of previous year’s efforts when taking your Boxing Day and ‘Twixmas’ walks through our stunning parks.

Collections can be booked online now at www.newark-sherwooddc.gov.uk/recycling/christmas-tree-recycling.

In January 2024 over 400 trees were collected and recycled by the District Council’s Waste Management Team and this doesn’t include the trees recycled through the garden waste collection service. Residents who pay for this can also cut their real trees and place them in their garden waste bin for recycling, remembering that the lid must be able to close.

All real trees can also be taken to any household recycling centre in the district.
