Local construction businesses invited to a tasty breakfast and engaging discussion
Posted on: Monday, October 9, 2023Newark and Sherwood District Council is working alongside Newark College to host a morning meeting for local construction businesses to find out more about regeneration and growth in the district all while a tasty breakfast is on offer.
The event, which will take place at Newark College on Friary Road on Friday 20 October between 7.30am and 9.30am, aims to provide businesses with the latest information and guidance in the industry, as well as a networking opportunity.
This includes details of free training, an introduction to the new construction facilities at Newark College, round table discussions and talks about how Newark College can assist with the challenges faced in the sector such as skill gaps, apprenticeships, and employment.
Councillor Matthew Spoors, Portfolio Holder for Sustainable Economic Development at Newark and Sherwood District Council, said: “Events like this help in bringing together a wide range of organisations in the construction sector to discuss challenges, share experiences and form positive partnerships.
“I encourage any local construction firm in Newark and Sherwood to come along and speak to other workers in your industry.
“The construction sector is a vital and valuable trade across the UK and in the district. Thanks to the new Construction College, we’re helping to train the next generation of engineers while making Newark the destination of choice for education.”
Penny Taylor MBE, Head of Newark Campuses at Newark College, said: “Newark College's mission is to be employer led and welcomes employers to support us to make changes to the curriculum which enhances students and apprentices' opportunities to find employment. By working alongside us we can shape the learning that takes place to ensure students and apprentices have the skills, knowledge and behaviours needed to be work ready.”
If you would like to attend the event, please email: Victoria.Cozens@newark-sherwooddc.gov.uk.
The event will be hosted at Newark Construction Centre which opened in June 2021. The centre not only helps students in learning relevant skills in industry-standard workshops, but it supports local businesses and self-employed engineers, by providing short courses, apprenticeships, programmes for career re-training and gas assessment training.
The centre was of one of many projects funded by Newark Town Board’s successful application to the Government’s Towns Fund initiative, which was match-funded by the Lincoln College Group. The disused building on Friary Road was repurposed and transformed into the new plumbing training and gas assessment centre.
