Work is starting this week to carry out important conservation work to Newark Castle. A condition survey was carried out earlier this year identifying necessary repairs to both the internal and external walls and care was then taken in finding a unique and specially trained team able to achieve the improvements.

The £570,000 conservation, funded by Newark and Sherwood District Council, is expected to continue into autumn to ensure that this special building is looked after, both for its own protection and for that of visitors to its grounds.

Councillor Rhona Holloway, Portfolio Holder for Economic Development and Visitors at Newark and Sherwood District Council, said: “We are delighted to have found a team who we can trust to properly care for our beloved Castle and excited for these works to be moving forward. The Castle has so much promise; we’re holding more and more events there and with the Gatehouse Project hopefully coming to fruition soon too, it’s more important than ever that the safety of this beautiful Scheduled Ancient Monument is secured, as well as that of visitors who come to enjoy its stunning walls.

Scheduled events including a Civil War re-enactment weekend at the end of July and Palace at the Castle open air theatre performances will continue as programmed and the Castle team will be working closely with couples to ensure any concerns are put to rest regarding their wedding days.

Heras safety fencing will remain in place while the internal wall repairs are carried out and is expected to be replaced with scaffolding when work begins on the external walls.
