The Teenage Market is coming to Southwell
Posted on: Thursday, July 21, 2022A market specifically for young and ambitious entrepreneurs to experience market trading and showcase their abilities for free returns to the district on Saturday, 13 August 2022, in the Southwell Minster Palace Gardens in Southwell between 10 am to 4 pm.
Newark and Sherwood District Council has again partnered with the Teenage Market Company to bring the market to the district, this time working with Southwell Minster to provide the young people of Southwell with this fantastic opportunity. It follows last year's incredibly successful and well received Teenage Market in Newark, which saw 12 young people show off their entrepreneurial skills and gain first-hand experience in running their own market stalls.
The Teenage Market is a nationwide initiative originally set up by teenage brothers Joe and Tom Barratt in their hometown of Stockport to bring more young people to their town's local market. The events are now delivered across the whole of the UK, supported by the government's High Streets Task Force, and are helping transform town and city centres with the creativity of young people.
To complement the market, Newark Book Festival will bring its first ever one day festival to Southwell on the same day. Visitors will be able to meet local authors, participate in activities aimed at both adults and children, and enjoy some live music and the literature village, a staple of the Book Festival.
Councillor Rhona Holloway, Portfolio Holder for Economic Development and Visitors at Newark and Sherwood District Council, said: "I am delighted that we have the opportunity to bring the Teenage Market to the young people of Southwell. It was brilliant last year to see so many young people enthused and showing off their skills at the Teenage Market in Newark. It's a great initiative for the young people in our district. I hope residents come along and support the market and the young traders."
Co-creator of The Teenage Market, Joe Barratt, said: "As events are allowed to return after the pandemic, I'm looking forward to re-establishing our Teenage Market events across the country. Having seen the impact that our events have made on the lives of young people, I'm delighted that Southwell is giving young people a free platform to get their businesses off the ground and showcase their creative talents."
