Finding yourself with nowhere to live or the risk of being made homeless is both frightening and stressful. Newark and Sherwood want to help you by preventing homelessness from occurring where possible so that you can avoid the worry of this difficult situation
In conjunction with partners at Broxtowe, Gedling and Rushcliffe Borough Councils, we have created step-by-step advice to provide you with housing advice and assist you in finding solutions to improve your housing situation. The housing advice portal is shared by all four of the authorities so when using this solution applicants are reminded to ensure you select Newark and Sherwood from any of the drop down menus to make sure you receive advice and suggestions that are relevant to remaining in the district. Some solutions will be generic across all four district and borough council's however some solutions are only available to applicants with a local connection.
Duty to Refer
The HRA introduces a new duty to refer requiring specified public authorities in England to notify Local Housing Authorities of service users/individuals they think may be homeless or threatened with becoming homeless in 56 days. The public authority must have consent from the individual should identify which LHA they would like to be referred to, as they would if approaching a housing authority directly.
Agencies and partners wishing to make a referral will need to register their organisation with Housing Jigsaw using the referral link below. You will only need to register once so retain a copy of your user name and password for future referrals.

We are urging privately rented tenants experiencing problems within their tenancy to seek help at the earliest opportunity. 30% of tenants become homeless locally due to a wide range of issues including difficulties in paying their rent on time, disputes over the condition of a property and the serving of a notice to quit.
Advice and assistance is available and tenants are being reassured that they should not feel alone but should contact their local Housing Options Team on 01636 650000 as soon as possible. Alternatively, free, independent, confidential and impartial advice is available through Citizens Advice who can be contacted on 0344 411 1444 or via the Gov.uk website.
The night shelter opens when outside temperatures are forecast to fall below 0C degrees on three consecutive nights or more. Offering rough sleepers a place to stay overnight and receive advice and support.
Please note the operating hours have now been reduced to Sunday night - Thursday night, 9.30pm. It will be closing completely on March, 27 2020.
If you are concerned about someone sleeping rough, you can use this link to send an alert to StreetLink. The details you provide are sent to the local authority or outreach service for the area in which you have seen the person, to help them find the individual and connect them to support

Housing authority processes and legal requirements
The Housing Act 1996 and its subsequent amendments including the Homelessness Reduction Act 2017 contain specific legal requirements for both the local housing authority to follow and also for customers who may be dissatisfied with the decisions the authority has reached/followed.
