Edwinstowe is named after King Edwin of Northumbria whose body was hidden in Sherwood Forest after his death at the Battle of Hatfield Close (in nearby Cuckney).

But the village is more commonly associated with the legend of Robin Hood who used the neighbouring forest to hide from the Sheriff of Nottingham. Robin and Marian were married at St Mary's Church and there is a statue to honour this on the High Street.
