New chief executive

29 March 2018

Newark and Sherwood District Council has appointed a new chief executive, subject to formal ratification by the Council at its meeting on 10th April.

John Robinson (51), who lives locally in Bottesford, has been recommended to the Council for appointment as its Head of Paid Service and Chief Executive by its Chief Officer’s Appointment Panel.

Currently the Chief Executive of Gedling Borough Council, John joined Gedling in 2008 as Deputy Chief Executive, becoming the Chief Executive 18 months later. Prior to that, John held a number of senior positions at Nottingham City Council, leaving as their Director of Environmental Services with responsibility for a wide range of front-line services. He started his career in 1987 at Nottingham City, before taking up roles with Peterborough City Council in their Committee and Policy teams.

A father-of-three sons, John is a keen sportsman and likes to spend his spare time with his family watching and playing a wide variety of sports, especially football, cycling and running.  John has been a member of the board of West Nottinghamshire College for a number of years and was previously a Director of Nottingham Regeneration Limited.

He was the Chair of Trustees of Trent Vineyard, one of the country’s largest churches, for a period of 7 years and continues to be a regular volunteer on various community projects that support homeless and other vulnerable people.

Roger Blaney, Leader of Newark and Sherwood District Council said: "I am delighted to announce the appointment of John as the Chief Executive of Newark and Sherwood District Council. As a serving and experienced chief executive, he was the unanimous choice to build on what is already a successful and strong organisation. He has successfully led large organisations, believes in partnership working and has a strong public service ethos. Coupled with commercial nous and skill, he is well placed to lead Newark and Sherwood to continued success in the future."

John said “It’s been almost a decade since I came to Gedling and I have thoroughly enjoyed my time there. I’ve been privileged to work with hugely talented and committed elected members, employees and partners and am very proud of what we’ve achieved together. After seven years as Chief Executive, I feel the time is right to move on and I’m really excited to be joining Newark and Sherwood who I regard as another top performing local authority. In the same way that my successor will take things forward from a strong base, I know that I am inheriting an excellent legacy at Newark and Sherwood and look forward to exploiting the massive potential for further improving the quality of life for those who live, work and visit Newark and Sherwood”.

John Clarke, Leader of Gedling Borough Council said: “We are very sorry to lose John as our Chief Executive. Working together, we’ve made Gedling a more ambitious, caring and compassionate Council. I would like to thank him on behalf of everyone at Gedling Borough Council for his commitment to our residents and excellent service over the last 10 years. As a new challenge awaits us both, we wish John and his family the very best of success at Newark and Sherwood District Council.”

John is expecting to take up his new role in July
