Planning Policy housing and employment land consultation - statement

19 January 2017

The council is carrying out a review and consultation of its Local Plan for longer term planning purposes and as part of this we are proposing that the current allocation for housing in and around the Seven Hills hostel, Quibell’s Lane, Newark, be changed to one for gypsy and traveller accommodation.

We take our commitment to equalities seriously and have a responsibility to find suitable land around the district for travelling communities to use.

No decision has been taken by the council to discontinue emergency hostel accommodation at Seven Hills and the council is continuing to commit resources to this facility to ensure it remains fit-for-purpose for the families and individuals that are temporarily housed there.

The council is very mindful of its legal responsibility to provide temporary accommodation for persons who have been made unintentionally homeless and are in priority need. Any decisions taken by the council around the long term future of the site at Seven Hills will need to take this requirement to provide this accommodation into account.

We are actively seeking people’s views on the use of land for housing and employment throughout the district and that is why it is a public consultation. As with all council consultations we have utilised the local press, the council's website and social media while ensuring local town and parish councils, local councillors and interest groups are all informed. We have contacted around 2,000 people on our planning policy database via email or letter and are running a number of public consultation events in Newark, Southwell and Edwinstowe and drop-in events at parishes around the district.

Residents are able to respond online or by emailing their views to planningpolicy@nsdc.info or by writing to
