Download the app now!
Don't miss out and download the Civil War Trail app which is now available for Apple and Android devices. The app will take you on a journey to explore the key sites around Newark such as Newark Castle and the Queen's Sconce. The app has been designed to allow you to experience the stories of local and national characters including King Charles I and John Twentyman (a local eye witness).
The stories are told through dramatic high quality film clips which can be viewed through a smartphone or tablet device when the content is triggered by Augmented Reality technology at each location (find out more about Augmented Reality below). A traditional paper version of the trail is also available from the National Civil War Centre and the trail can be followed in any order.
The app gives you:
- A chance to meet characters who tried to built or tried to destroy Newark
- An interactive timeline
- An action packed game
- The Civil War Trail with map and AR content
There are interpretation boards at 8 locations around Newark, where you simply open the app's AR viewfinder and view the trigger images on the board to bring to life the Augmented Reality content. There will also be a paper version of the trail for those without a smart device.
100s of people were involved in the making of the civil war trail from professional actors and extras including our Chief Executive, Andrew Muter, to re-enactors, photographers, a documentary maker, students from Newark College and our fantastic local film production company, Spool, who are based in Nottingham.
The content for the app was filmed over several months and will be used for two purposes. Longer footage will be shown within the National Civil War Centres theatre, and outside the Centre, short segments will be shown in the Augmented Reality Town Trail.
Augmented Reality is an emerging technology which blurs the boundaries between the real world and the virtual. The technology is becoming increasingly popular as it enables the user to engage with additional content or interpretation in a new and visual way. On the Newark Civil War Trail, the Augmented Reality is triggered by the camera in the users smartphone or tablet.
