Private sector housing tenant advice
We aim to encourage high standards of accommodation, repair and good management in the private housing rented sector.
Although Newark and Sherwood has a lower proportion of privately rented dwellings than the national average, there are still around 3,300 homes rented from a private landlord or letting agent.
If you are currently a tenant or considering renting from a private landlord, the information on this page may be useful.
If your rented property is in poor condition or you feel there is a risk to your health and safety, we recommend you contact your landlord stating exactly what the problems are.
If you are still not satisfied, or if the landlord fails to respond to your concerns, please contact us.
If you live in private rented accommodation and have a repairing obligation, then you may be able to apply for financial assistance towards repairs and/or property improvements through grants provided by the council.
Other organisations which may offer further support and information to tenants in the private sector include the Federation of Private Residents Associations (FPRA), Shelter – the housing and homelessness charity and the Citizens’ Advice Bureau.
