Over the last four years, the gradual economic recovery and continued austerity with public finances have continued to present challenges for local authorities. The council has been able to manage its finances and services carefully, making significant savings while responding to the needs of Newark and Sherwood’s residents, communities and businesses.
Difficult choices have been made about priorities, large savings have been delivered (£3.5 million between 2011/12 and 2014/15) and key improvements have been delivered. Management costs and overheads have been reduced significantly and the move to a new council office building will contribute to further reductions in overheads. We are planning to make further savings as our income from government reduces up to the year 2020.
Major investments have been realised in a new museum and National Civil War Centre and the new Newark Sports and Fitness Centre and looking ahead to 2017 we will have delivered a new council headquarters and will unlock private and government funding in business and in housing, creating more local jobs, boosting supply chains and aiding community wellbeing.
The council is consulting its residents, stakeholders and partners on its proposed priorities for the next four years.
Your views are welcome as they will help the council to shape its future services and ways of working.

Newark and Sherwood District Council is committed to listening and learning from the views of local people, businesses and voluntary and community groups. Your views on how services are provided are important to us.
Overall the respondents to the survey supported the proposed priorities and the Council adopted them at its meeting on 12 July 2016. Consideration will be given to the comments as individual priorities are developed and implemented by business units.
